Step #1: Recharge and Reflect

Before you can move forward into laying things out for the upcoming year, you’ll want to take some time to think back on how things went for you over the previous year in regards to your work.

What do you think went exceptionally well? What could’ve gone better? What major career accomplishments are you proud of? Are there any areas where you feel like you fell short?

Whether you discover that you could be more focused or you’re disappointed that you didn’t follow through with getting that professional certification you’ve been wanting for ages, taking the time to reflect will provide important context as you move through the rest of the steps.

Step #2: Express Gratitude

Nothing gets your year started off better than a positive attitude. For that reason, while you’re reflecting, also take some time to appreciate the things—both big and small—that have already happened.

Did you land a promotion? Receive a professional award? Wrap up a project that was really important to you? Do you simply feel grateful to work with such an excellent team?

Take a minute to really acknowledge those positives. Doing so will help you plan for this year with an attitude of enthusiasm, rather than dread.

Step #3: Jot Down Some Goals

Add some personal time too.

Step #5: Organize and Declutter
